Everyone Is Photogenic — You Just Need the Right Lens

One of the most common things I hear before a session is, “I’m not photogenic.” Almost every client who comes in for headshots says it at least once. But here’s what I’ve learned over years of doing professional headshots and portrait photography — everyone is photogenic. Being photogenic isn’t about having perfect angles or model-like features; it’s about being seen through the right eyes, in the right light, by someone who knows how to bring out your natural character. Photography isn’t about capturing a version of you — it’s about revealing the version that’s already there.

When I work with clients here in my Durham photography studio, we start with intention. Setting a clear intention for your session — whether it’s confidence, authenticity, or approachability — helps guide every moment. When that intention is present, you stop worrying about what you look like and start connecting with how you feel. That shift makes a powerful difference in your photos, especially for branding, headshots, LinkedIn portraits, and professional images that tell your story.

Photography is a blend of art, technique, and trust. It’s lighting, composition, timing, and emotion all working together. During a headshot session, my focus isn’t just on your best angles; it’s on creating a relaxed environment where you feel comfortable being yourself. The best images often come from those in-between moments — a laugh, a thoughtful glance, or that natural smile when you forget there’s a camera involved.

Finding the right photographer matters. The right person doesn’t just take your picture — they see you. They help you feel at ease, bring out your personality, and capture the subtle expressions that make you, you. Whether you’re an actor, entrepreneur, or creative professional, your headshot should reflect your true energy and character. That’s why I love working one-on-one with clients to create images that feel genuine and timeless.

So if you’ve ever said, “I’m not photogenic,” I’d invite you to rethink that. You absolutely are — you just need the right photographer to help bring it forward. With clear intention, natural direction, and the right lighting, everyone can look incredible in front of the camera. If you’re ready to experience that for yourself, I’d love to help you see how photogenic you already are.
